Director, Cinematographer, EditorLos Angeles-based, Brazilian-born Japanese artist and sculptor Kenzi Shiokava has been making work for over fifty years. Shiokava has crafted tree trunks and old telephone poles into mystical shapes in an old Compton body shop for several decades, and made his living as a gardener for much of his life — including, at one point, for Marlon Brando.
Shiokava generally remained on the fringes of the art community for decades, until he was discovered and showcased at the Hammer Museum’s Made in L.A. exhibition.
Light Out of Darkness
Director and EditorLight Out of Darkness is a feature length documentary depicting the lives and stories of Holocaust survivors living in the Los Angeles Area. It is the winner of the Peter Stark Memorial Scholarship and has screened at the Darren Star and James Bridges Theater, and currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Watch the trailer below.
